After having the tendonitis/tendonosis/whatever experience with my elbow (which, after more than six months, is now almost sorted, thanks to my physio I’d add) I am extremely aware of tendon issues as they are just taking forever to heal, and only heal at all if you do the right exercises. So when after using my VFF’s and Merrell True Gloves my Achilles tendon started hurting a bit I contacted my physio right away. So here is the skinny.
I am currently back in Kiev (this also being the reason for my lack of blog-posts lately). As for exercises: zilch / nada / rien / null points. It is WAY TO HOT – it feels like July or August. And I am busy all day (how does three hours at the dentist sound?).
Which brings me to the main topic of this post: the one exercise I am doing is walking, maybe 10km/day. And all I have for shoes is the Merrell True Glove, and the Vibram Five Finger KSO’s. Boy – my calves hurt.
This is really surprising: I was wearing the Merrells (and to a lesser extent the VFF’s) in London for almost six weeks, but of course I am walking much less (I take my kick-scooter everywhere, or occasionally a Boris bike, or the subway if it is for work).
So in London, everything honkey-dorey. Here: ouch! Not only the muscles, but also the Achilles tendon – not bad, but complaining nevertheless.
Facit: easy tiger with the transition to barefoot shoes – decades of wearing “normal” ones can not be reversed in a few short days, or even weeks it seems…
I have previously written about my Merrell True Gloves, and I have to say I still really like them. Yesterday I was at the Westfield shopping centre though, and there a new Vibram shop had just opened. And – unusually I have to say at the moment – they had stock, and they had stock at my size. So I finally tried the VFF KSO’s – and I loved them, bought them, and was seriously thinking about keeping them on in bed. Well, sort of, but I was wearing them all day yesterday, and today again, even taking them to a spin in the gym. So after one day of wearing the VFF’s, here my initial assessment:
That’s about a week that I have my Merrell “True Glove” barefoot shoes, and yesterday was the first day that I was actually wearing them for an extended period of time. So here my impressions Continue reading
